Men’s S & D team win with two couples!!

Congractulations to the Men’s team in Division 6.  Despite having only two couples the team beat Brentwood D by 5-4 on rubbers despite conceding three rubbers. John Firth and jamie Macefield won all theri three rubbers – 6-4, 6-2 gainst the firsts, by 6-0, 6-2 against the seconds and 6-1, 7-6 against the thirds. Second pair Alin Carariu and matt Metclafe lost their first rubber to the second Brentwood pair on a tie-break after sets of 2-6, 6-4. However they beat the firsts on a long tie break after sets of 4-6, 7-6  and then beat the thirds, again on a long tie-break afte sets of 6-4. 3-6.  Match score was 5-4 in rubbers 10 sets each and, by virture of Brentwood winning three rubbers by a maximum score the games were 84 to Brentawwod and 67 to Ridgeway – a great effort.

Works League teams suffer double defeat

The Works League season kicked off their season on the 24th April and it was a double defeta for the two teams.  The A team, back in Division 1 were in action at Moorgate A whilst the B team hosted Stocksbridge B at Ridgeway. The A team, which lost by 0-4 comprised John Firth and Harvey Marsh and Danny Lidster and Matt Metcalfe.  John and Harvey lost both rubbers by 7-9 whilst Danny and Matt lost by 3-9 a,d 4-9.   Ta narrow defeat and lost on a games countback of 30 games to 33 after rubbers were shared at 2-2.  Jasper Patel and Jarek Doroszko won their two rubbers by 9-7 and 9-8 whilst Ben Kay and Lindy Payling lost theirs by 8-9 and 4-9.

Men’s team kick off the season in style

Ridgeway@s Men’s team in Div 6 of the S & D LTA Men’s Leahgue kicked of the season in some style with a comprehensive 8-1 against near rivals Graves C.

In the first round of matches John firth and jamie Macefield beat the firsts by 6-0, 6-3, Rob Mtchell and Matt Metcalfe beat the seconds on a deciding tie-break after sets of 4-6, 6-4 had been shared.  Third couple Ben Kay and Harvey Marsh beat the thirds by 6-2, 6-3.  In the second round of matches Jamie and John beat the seconds in a deciding tie-break after sets of 4-6, 6-1, Rob and Matt beat the thirds by 6-2, 6-0 whilst Ben and Harvey beat the second Graves pair on a deciding tie-break after sets of 6-0, 3-6.  At 6 rubbers to nil after two rounds the match was already won but Ridgeway pressed on and Jamie and John beat the thirds by 6-1, 6-2, Rob and Matt beat the firsts by 6-2, 6-1 but Ben and Harvey lost to the first pair on a decising tie-break after sets of 4-6, 6-4.

Match score was Rubbers 8-1 and Sets of 17-5

S & D LTA Annual Tournaments 2024

The S & D LTA Tournaments will run asa usual this summer – see the poster below if you are interested in taking part.  All the details for taking part are on the poster which will also be displayed on the Club’s noticeboard inside the pavilion.

Belwo is a second poster for the Ladies Day event at Beauchief Tennis Club on the 9th June 2024.   This will also be on the club’s noticeboard inside the pavilion.                                                                    

Activity Camp 2nd -12th April

There is an activity camp using the Sports Club’s facilities during the school holiday.  This will run from the 2nd to the 12th during the day, not including Saturday and Sunday.  At times they are likely to use the tennis courts for some of their activities.  It will not stop members playing at the club. There will be Camp supervisors there who will move out of members way if necessary to allow them to play tennis.

Use of the club’s facilties for this kind of activity is a key component of the Sports Club’s main objectives in its duty as a Registered Charity. It also brings in revenue for the Sports Club.

Tournament 2024

Dear Members,

Hope you are all well!

You are all invited to take part in this year’s club tournaments:

–         Ladies Singles
–         Ladies Doubles
–         Men Singles
–         Men Doubles
–         Mixed Doubles
(Can I please encourage as many ladies as possible to please sign up for this competition as we usually have plenty of men signing up…)

Possible Changes to previous years depending of number of entries:

A consolation round could be considered for those who lose first round matches.

Also, in Mixed Doubles the lady losing in first round could play again with a second partner to

give more men chance to take part.

Members who sign up need to be available for Finals Day on Sunday, 8th September 2024  if you manage to reach  one of the finals.

Just some general info especially for our new members who we would like to encourage to give it a go:

The tournaments are a great way of getting to know other club members, getting chance to play more competitively and it is very convenient as you arrange the date & time yourselves whenever it suits you with your opponent/double partner.
(contact details will be shared with each group after the draw end of April)

We have a couple of cut-off dates:

All first round matches should be played by 30th June 2024.
All results must be reported back to myself as a record.
We usually aim to have the semi-finals played at least one or two weeks ahead of the finals day.

Otherwise the matches can be arranged during the season at your convenience.

Entry fees will be £3 per tournament to cover the costs of trophies etc.

Closing date for entries is Monday, 8th April 2024.

The draw will take place end of April.Once we have the final numbers of competitors the format of each tournament will be confirmed and sent out to all competitors accordingly.
