The Works League A team had a convincing win on the 26th by beating Moorgate B at the Rotherham club’s courts.  John Firth and tim Robison beat the first by 9-5 and the seconds by 9-4 whilst Alin Carnariu and Jarek Doroszko beat the the seconds by 9-1 and then beat the first by 9-5.  Final match score  Rubbers  4-0, games 36-15.

The men’s Saturday team carried on from its 8-1 at Barnsley last week with another convincing win, this time at home to Graves C.

In round one John Firth and Tim Robinson beat the visitors first pair by 6-3, 6-4 whilst Mick Mason and Matt Metcalfe beat the seconds by 6-0, 6-1 and Alin Carniriu and Steve Hill beat the thirds by 6-4, 6-4.  In the second round John and Tim beat the seconds by 6-1, 6-2 while Mick and Matt beat the thirds by 6-3, 6-2 but Steve and Alin lost to the firsts by 2-6, 4-6.  That left the match at 5-1 after two rounds so a victory was certain.  John and Tim beat the thirds by 6-2, 6-2 and Alin and Steve beat the seconds by 6-2, 6-2 but Mick and Matt lost to the firsts by 4-6, 2-6.

Final match score Rubbers – 7-2, Sets 14-4 Games 96-56.

The Men’s Late Summer League fixtures have now been released.    Fixtures appear on the Fixtures page and the matches start on Saturday 22nd July with a home fixture against Graves B.  The last match is on Saturday the 23rd September with a home match v Bamford.  Format is four players per team rather then the 6 man format in the current Div 6 fixtures.

Ridgeway’s A team lost in their home quarter final cup match against Div 1 leaders Stocksbridge A but it was a close run thing.  With rubbers shared at 2-2 it was a win on sets by the visitors by 5-4.

In the first round of matches John Firth and Jamie Macefield lost both sets 4-6, 2-6 but the match was of a really high standard.  Meanwhile Rob Mitchell and Tim Robinson beat the seconds by 6-3, 6-4.

In the second round John and Jamie beat the seconds on a tie-break after sets of 4-6, 6-3 but Rob and Tim lost to the firsts by 3-6, 0-6.

A convincing 8-1 on Saturday by the men’s team against Barnsley’s  D team.  The only rubber dropped was a concession by Steve and Dave Bramhall after Steve had picked an injury.

Jamie Macefield and John Firth beat the firsts by 6-2, 6-1 whilst Steve and Dave Bramhall beat the seconds by 6-2, 6-2 and Tim Robinson and Matt Metcalfe  beat the thirds by 6-0, 6-0.  In the second round of matches Jamie and John beat the seconds by 6-2, 61,  Steve and Dave beat the thirds by 6-2, 6-1 and Tim and Matt beat the firsts by 6-3, 6-3.  After two rounds at 6-0 up to Ridgeway Steve Bramhall had got an injury so there match against the firsts was conceded at 0-6, 0-6.  Jamie and John beat then beat the thirds by 6-0, 6-0 and Tim and Matt beat the seconds by 6-0, 6-1.

Final match score Rubbers: 8-1, Sets 16-2, Games 96-32

It was a great night for the two works league teams on the 14th June.

The A team went to play Stocksbridge B and had a convincing 4-0 win.  John Firth and Jamie Macefield won their two rubbers by 9-3 against the firsts and by 9-2 against the seconds.  Dave Bramhall and Mick Mason beat the seconds by 9-1 and then the first by 9-4.   Final score: Rubbers 4-0 Games 36-10.  The win puts the A team on 6 points and just two points behind Welbeck B.

The B team entertained Moorgate B at Ridgeway and the B team ran out winners on a games countback after rubbers were shared at 2-2.  Ben Kay and Matt Metcalfe just lost to the first pair by 9-8 on the deciding tie break but beat the seconds 9-3.    Jarek Doroszko and Cliff Andrews beat the seconds by 9-4 but then lost to the first by 7-9. Final match score was: Rubbers 2-2 Games 33-25.

Next week, June 21st sees the A team take on Division 1 leaders Stocksbridge A at Ridgeway.

Below are the Works League as at 13th June 2023.  Just a pity about last week’s A team narrow defeat last week.

Both Works League teams were in action on Wednesday 7th June and the B team had a 3-1 win at Stocksbridge B but the A team lost at home on a games countback after rubbers were shared at 2-2

The B team winners first: Ben Kay partnered Steve Hill and they lost to the first pair by 7-9 but beat the second pair on a tie break decider to win 9-8.  John Hallgarth and Matt Metcalfe won both their rubbers by beating the second couple by 9-5 and then the firsts by 9-6. Final score: Rubbers 3-1 Games 34-28.

The A team played Welbeck B at Ridgeway.  John Firth partnered Jasper Patel and they lost by 7-9 to the firsts and by 4-9 to the seconds.  Mick Mason and Dave Bramhall beat the seconds on a tie-break to win 9-8 and then beat the firsts by 9-5.  The result was Rubbers 2-2  Games 29-31 in favour of the visitors.

On Saturday the 3rd June the men’s team lost their latest match 2-7 to Brentwood C at a sun-drenched Ridgeway.

John Firth and Harvey Marsh lost to the first couple by 6-7, 2-6.  Tim Robinson and Alin Carnariu lost to the seconds by 2-6, 1-6 and Mick and Matt Metcalfe lost to the thirds by 2-6, 6-7. Matt was making his debeut in the Saturday S & D leagues.

In the second round of matches John and Harvey lost to the seconds by 2-6, 1-6 whilst Tim and Alin beat the thirds on a long tie-break after sets of 2-6, 6-3. Mick and Matt lost to the first by 4-6, 4-6  At 5-1 down after two round the rubbers score was 5-1 to the visitors but John and Harvey got another rubber for Ridgeway by beating the thirds by 6-4, 7-6.  Tim and Alin lost to the firsts by 3-6, 2-6 and Mick and Matt lost to the seconds by 2-6, 2-6,  Final match score was Rubbers 2-7, Sets 3-15 and games 63-105.

Well done to Matt on his first game in the S & D league.
