Ridgeway men’s match against Thorncliffe fell victim to the weather on Saturday (8th), Both caotains agreed late morning that with the forecast fro the rest of the day it was not worth the teams meeting uo at Ridgeway at 2;00 pm only to have to go home. The match has been re-arranged for Saturday the 26th June and the fixture list and calendar have been amended to show this.

Works League team lose to Moorgate A
The Works League team lost on Wednesday the 5th May to Moorgate A at the Rotherham club’s home courts. It was the third time in 5 days that a Ridgeweay team had played there. Unfortunately, the Works League team had a 1-3 defeat. Glyn Rudge and Mick Mason beat the first couple by 9-7 before losing to the seconds rather disappointingly by 9-2. Ben Kay paired up with Keith Hukin, who was making his Ridgeway competitive debut, but they lost both rubbers. They lost to the seconds by 9-4 before losing 9-1 to the first Moorgate pair. Final match score: Rubbers 1-3, Games: 16-34
Mixed team suffer first match defeat
Ridgeway fielded a mixed doubles team for the first time in many years on Tuesday 4th May but it ended in a 0-4 defeat to Moorgate B at the Rotherham club’s courts. After last week’s postponement against Graves because of bad weather, it was another wet night and didn’t help either side as it rained heavily during the match. Still, dessopite a defeat, it is great for the club to be competing in the Mixed League once again. Long may it continue.
Rob Mitchell and Sheila Goodwin though had two very close matches, but just losing both of them on a deciding tie break after sharing sets at 1-1. In the first round Rob and Sheila lost the tie-break after sets of 6-4, 1-6. in their second rubber the sets were shared at 7-6, 3-6. Meanwhile Tim Robinson and Lindy Payling lost both their rubbers, losing to the seconds by 2-6, 1-6 and then to the firsts 0-6, 1-6.
Final match score was Rubbers 0-4, Sets 2-6, Games – 21-48.
Social Session cancelled – 4th May
Due to the very poor forecast for this evening, the organised social session will not take place.
The courts are available should anyone wish to arrange play amongst themselves, no more than 6 players mixing are permitted for informal play. Please inform Sandra Bennett and remember to bring your own tennis balls.

Ridgeway lose in close match at Moorgate
Ridgeway’s Saturday Men’s team just lost out in a tight match at Moorgate against the Rotherham club’s C team., goping dwon ona countback on sets after the rubbers were saherd at 2-2. Glyn Rudge partnered Dave Bramhall and they lbeat the Moorgate first couple on a tie break after sets of 7-6. 2-6. In the second rubber they last to the second pair by 3-6, 3-6. Rob Mitchell and John Hallgarth also lost to the second couple by 1-6, 1-6 but they beat the first couple by 6-4, 6-4.
Final match score was Rubbers 2-2, Sets 3-5 Games 30-44.
Men’s Works League team suffer first match defeat
Ridgeway’s first Works League match of the seasonin Division 1 ended in a home defeat to Swinden House from Rotherham. After the wet weather of Tuesday it was a bright, if chilly, evening but the visitors were too hot for Ridgeway, winning 4-0.
Ridgeway’s first couple of Ben Kay and Steve Hill lost 6-9 to the first couple while Tim Robinson and Cliff Andrews lost to the seconds by 0-9. In the second round Ben and Steve also lost to the seconds by 0-9 and Tim and Cliff lost to the firsts by 3-9.
Final match score was Rubbers 0-4 Games – 9-36.
Coaching sessions as usual Monday 3rd May
The Junior and Adult coaching sessions will go ahead as usual next Monday, the 3rd May. Despite being a Bank Holiday, it has been decided to hold the sessions as normal.
Mixed match to be re-arranged
The first mixed match of the season, due to be played tonight (27th) will be re-arranged as it was postponed because of the weather. The courts were damp and more rain forecast and although the rain was lighter at 6 o’clock a decision had already been taken.
Ridgeway get off to winning start
Ridgeway Men’s team kicked the competitive season off with a great 4-0 win against Chesterfield based Queen’s Park. Glyn Rudge and Danny Lidster beat the visitors first couple by 6-4, 6-2 and Dave and Steve Bramhall beat the seconds by 6-1, 6-0. In the second round of matches Glyn and Danny beat the seconds by 6-4, 6-2 whilst Dave and Steve beat the firsts in a tight match, winning the long tie break after sets were shared at 7-6, 3-6. Final match score was Rubbers 4-0, Sets 7-2, Games 47-25. The next match at the courts is Tuesday evening, 27th April, when the Mixed Doubles team take on Graves B. There will be no social tennis possible during any of the Home matches.
