Works League A team in the narrowest of wins

The Works League A team had the narrowest of wins against Hackenthorpe in the knock out cup on the 19th June. Im a different format to league matches with each rubbere being the best of three sets, no tie breaks and a set being won by 6-5 the match proved to incrdibly close,, Rob Mitchell and John Firth won their first rubber by 6-0, 6-3 whilst Alin Carnariu and Mick Mason lost theior first rubber by 0-6, 2-6. In the reverse rubbers Alin and Mick won by 6-2, 6-4 whilst Rob and John lost by 6-4, 7-5.  At 2 rubbers each and 4 sets each the match went to a gemes countback with Ridgeway winning by the narrowest of margins by 35-34.

Works League latest

12th June the two Works League teams had contrasting results. The A team lost at home to Moorgate A by 0-4 but the B team beat Stocksbridge B away by 4-0.

At Ridgeway Rob Mitchell and Jack Lee lost by 7-9 and 6-9 whilst John Firth and Harvey Marsh lost by 1-9 and 4-9. Games totals were 18- 36.

At Stocksbridge Jasper Patel and Richard Atkinson won by 9-4 and 9-8 whilst Danny Lidster and Ben Kay won by 9-2 and 9-4. Games totals were 36-18

Saturday Men’s team win again

The S & D Men’s team gained a 7-2 win against Ecclesall C team at Ridgeway on Saturday 8th June. It was the team’s third consecutive win.

With Ecclesall only fielding two coupleit made the task a little easier although the visitors two couples put up a tough fight. With effectively a 3-0 start only two rubbers were needed for a victory.

John Firth anmd Jaamie Macefield had a good battle in theri first rubber and won on a decidong tiw break after sets of 3-6, 6-4.  Rob Mitchell and Jack Lee also won their first rubber on a deciding tie-break after sets 6-3, 4-6.  Those two rubbers meant the points were safe but rubbers were also vital. Mick Mason and Aaln Carnariu lost to the first couple by 2-6, 2-6 but went on to beat the second couple by 7-5, 6-4.  John and Jamie beat the seconds by 6-1, 6-1 and Rob and Jack lost to the firsts by 3-6, 4-6.

Final match score was Rubbers 7-2, Sets 14-6, Games 91-54. It leaves the team third in Div 6 with 1 match to play on the 22nd June.

Sunday Social 12th May cancelled due to Farmers Market

The wekkly Sunday morning social session on the 12th May will be cancelled as the grounds will be taken over for the Farmers and Craft Market. Access to the grounds by traders starts from 8.00a.m.  The market starts at 11.00 a.m.  There will be parking for those members who will be helping and there will be public parking only for the market itself although this may be limited due to condition of the grounds.  The market finishes at 3:00 pm and the grounds are normally clear by 4.30 pm.  Please support the market if you can as all funds raised go towards the maintenance and upkeep of all the facilities on the grounds.

Men’s S & D team win with two couples!!

Congractulations to the Men’s team in Division 6.  Despite having only two couples the team beat Brentwood D by 5-4 on rubbers despite conceding three rubbers. John Firth and jamie Macefield won all theri three rubbers – 6-4, 6-2 gainst the firsts, by 6-0, 6-2 against the seconds and 6-1, 7-6 against the thirds. Second pair Alin Carariu and matt Metclafe lost their first rubber to the second Brentwood pair on a tie-break after sets of 2-6, 6-4. However they beat the firsts on a long tie break after sets of 4-6, 7-6  and then beat the thirds, again on a long tie-break afte sets of 6-4. 3-6.  Match score was 5-4 in rubbers 10 sets each and, by virture of Brentwood winning three rubbers by a maximum score the games were 84 to Brentawwod and 67 to Ridgeway – a great effort.

Works League teams suffer double defeat

The Works League season kicked off their season on the 24th April and it was a double defeta for the two teams.  The A team, back in Division 1 were in action at Moorgate A whilst the B team hosted Stocksbridge B at Ridgeway. The A team, which lost by 0-4 comprised John Firth and Harvey Marsh and Danny Lidster and Matt Metcalfe.  John and Harvey lost both rubbers by 7-9 whilst Danny and Matt lost by 3-9 a,d 4-9.   Ta narrow defeat and lost on a games countback of 30 games to 33 after rubbers were shared at 2-2.  Jasper Patel and Jarek Doroszko won their two rubbers by 9-7 and 9-8 whilst Ben Kay and Lindy Payling lost theirs by 8-9 and 4-9.

Men’s team kick off the season in style

Ridgeway@s Men’s team in Div 6 of the S & D LTA Men’s Leahgue kicked of the season in some style with a comprehensive 8-1 against near rivals Graves C.

In the first round of matches John firth and jamie Macefield beat the firsts by 6-0, 6-3, Rob Mtchell and Matt Metcalfe beat the seconds on a deciding tie-break after sets of 4-6, 6-4 had been shared.  Third couple Ben Kay and Harvey Marsh beat the thirds by 6-2, 6-3.  In the second round of matches Jamie and John beat the seconds in a deciding tie-break after sets of 4-6, 6-1, Rob and Matt beat the thirds by 6-2, 6-0 whilst Ben and Harvey beat the second Graves pair on a deciding tie-break after sets of 6-0, 3-6.  At 6 rubbers to nil after two rounds the match was already won but Ridgeway pressed on and Jamie and John beat the thirds by 6-1, 6-2, Rob and Matt beat the firsts by 6-2, 6-1 but Ben and Harvey lost to the first pair on a decising tie-break after sets of 4-6, 6-4.

Match score was Rubbers 8-1 and Sets of 17-5

S & D LTA Annual Tournaments 2024

The S & D LTA Tournaments will run asa usual this summer – see the poster below if you are interested in taking part.  All the details for taking part are on the poster which will also be displayed on the Club’s noticeboard inside the pavilion.

Belwo is a second poster for the Ladies Day event at Beauchief Tennis Club on the 9th June 2024.   This will also be on the club’s noticeboard inside the pavilion.
