Men’s team in narrow defeat on games countback
The men’s team lost its latest Men’s Work League match by a narrow margin against Ecclesall B at the Ecclesall club’s courts on Saturday.
Steve Bramall partnered Keith Hukin and they lost to the first couple by 1-6, 2-6 but then went on to beat the seconds by mirroring the scores at 6-1, 6-2. Danny Lidster and Cliff Andrews beat the seconds by 7-5, 6-4 but then lost to the firsts by 6-3, 6-0. it meant Rubbers were shared at 2-2, Sets at 4-4 so the result went down to a countback on games and Ecclesall edged it by 36 games to Ridgeway’s 31.
Just two games remain for the team with no fixture next Saturday on the 28th.
Bank Holiday Monday tournament

All members are invited to take part in our August Bank Holiday Monday Doubles tournament. This will be run on a handicap system so is suitable for all ability levels. Players should arrive for 10.30 to register and warm up.You may wish to bring a chair or blanket, also bring your picnic lunch. Depending on numbers the event will run until mid afternoon.

Welbeck take the Works League Cup from Moorgate
The Works League cup knockout final provided some high quality tennis at Ridgeway last Wednesday (11th August). It was a repeat of last year’s final between Welbeck A and holders Moorgate A but this year it was Welbeck who took the trophy with a 4-0 win. Sets were 8-2 in Welbeck’s favour and games won were 52 to 34. The match between Josh Bows and Mark Busby of Moorgate and Pete Etchells and Niral Nana of Welbeck produced some fantastic tennis decided by a third set victory for Welbeck.
Moorgate B beat Ridgeway men’s team 3-1
In the latest match in the Late Summer Men’s League Ridgeway were defeated by 1-3 to Moorgate B.
Match score was Rubbers 1-3, Sets 2-6, Games 26-44.
Welbeck B beat Men’s team in latest Late Summer League match
Welbeck’s B team proved too strong for Ridgeway in the latest match in the Late Summer Men’s League played at Ridgeway on the 31st July 2021.
Glyn Rudge and Keith Hukin opened against the first Welbeck pair but lost 2-6, 1-6. Rob Mitchell partnerred Tim Robinson as second pair but they lost in the first round to the second Welbeck pair by 1-6, 1-6.
In the second round of matchess Glyn and Keith lost by 3-6, 0-6 whilst Rob and Tim lost by2-6, 0-6.
Final match score was Rubbers 0-4, Sets 0-8 and Games 10-48.
Covid 19 update
In view of the recent guidance from the Government and the LTA in respect of Covid 19, the Club’s Committee has decided the following:
- Test and Trace will not now be required for any members arranging their own social play. However records will be kept of those attending coaching, matches and organised social sessions.
- Members are asked to still follow the following:Covid-19 Advice
– High temperature, symptoms or positive Covid test result = NO PLAY.
– Please keep a respectful distance from others.
– Please use hand gel regularly to maintain good hand hygiene. - We will continue to monitor LTA guidanceand keep members updated when necessary.
Club to host Works League Cup Knockout final – 11th August
Ridgeway will be hosting the Works League Knockout Cup Final on the 11th August 2021. The match wiil take place between Moorgate A v Welback A, the two top teams in the league this season. The courts will niot be available for members to use that evening. The match will start at 6:00 pm.
Fulwood win at Ridgeway
A Fulwood Tennis Club team played at Ridgeway for the first time in many years and took the spoils in a convioncing 4-0 win. Danny Lidster and Glyn Rudge led the charge for the home team but could only take a single game against the first Fulwood couple in a 1-6, 0-6 defeat. Steve Bramhall and John Hallgarth lost to the seconds by 1-6, 2-6. In the second round of matches Danny and Glyn lost by 2-6, 3-6 to the seconds whilst Steve and John lost 0-6, 0-6 to the first pair.
Final match score – Rubbers 0-4, Sets 0-8, Games 9-48.
Works League team finish with a defeat at Swinden House
The curtain came down on the Works League team’s season with the playing of the twice potsponed away match to Swinden House played in Clifton Park at Rotherham. The home team won 4-0. Ridgeway’s first pair of Danny Lidster and John Hallgarth just lost 8-9 against the first couple whilst Ben Kay and Cliff Andrews lost to the second pair by 5-9. In the second round of matches Danny and John lost to the seconds by 4-9 whilst Ben and Cliff lost to the firsts by 3-9.
Final match score Rubbers 0-4, Games 20-36.
