Winter tennis arrangements

Dear Member,

This is to notify you of the winter tennis arrangments at the club.

1. As from Thursday 21st October the tennis nets will be taken down and the area will be used for junior football training each Thursday and Friday evening during the winter.

2. From the 21st October the floodlights will not be available for use by members for social play during the winter period. They will be working on a timer which is pre-set for the football times (football goes ahead whatever the weather unless there are snow or frost issues). However, it may be coaching continues on Monday for a few more weeks but those who are attending coaching will be contacted about that when it has been fully considered.

3. From the 23rd October it is intended to put up two tennis nets on a Saturday morning (weather permitting) and then be taken down on Thursday afternoon. If for any reason the nets are not put up on a Saturday, then members can still get a net out and use the courts. The courts will be available for tennis at weekends and Monday to Thursday when they will be taken down again.

4. Members can still play on a Friday but would have to put a net up and put it away again after they have finished playing. The nets will be stored in the box at the top of the courts.

These arrangements may be reviewed. If there is any change members will be notified.

Note: the reason why the courts are used in this way is because some of the funding for the court area came from the Football Trust and the Sports Club has for over 25 years allowed junior football on the area. In reality, tennis usage drops off considerably durung the winter months and the use by junior football also brings in revenue from the hire charges at a time when the area wouldlikely be stood unused. There is still ample court time available for members.

Works League – final league tables

The final league tables for the Works League has been published and are shown below.  As you will see the top two teams were just a different class in both divisions.  An AGM will be held at some stage and there are some issues over the structure of the leagues, number of players per team ( 4 or 6) and the quality of the top teams in relation to the others.  It has obviously been a hard season for our team and it is no real fun to suffer the type of heavy defeats to the Welbeck and Moorgate A teams, especially when we played them three times.  Thanks to all the players who took part and for Ben Kay in sorting out the team.

Finals Day results and report

The Club finals day was very successful on Sunday the 12th.  Four finals were played with the Men’s Doubles final being postponed due to injury to Cliff Andrews.

There were a lot of spectators there enjoying the tennis and the refreshments. The results were as follows:

Ladies singles:  Winner Lucy Mitchell who beat Lindy Payling by 6-0, 6-2

Men’s Singles:  Winner: Glyn Rudge who beat Rob Mitchell by 6-3, 6-3

Ladies Doubles: Winners: Vicky Hukin and Lindy Payling who beat Lucy Mitchell and Bernie Highfield by 6-2, 6-4

Mixed Doubles: Winners: Keith Hukin and Lucy Mitchell who beat Mark Firth and Lindy Payling  6-4, 6-3

Congratulations to the winners of course but well done to the runners-up too.. Big thank you to Mel Wright for organising the tournaments and to the ladies Wendy, Sheila, Judy and Mel who sorted out the refeshments.  Thanks to everyone who competed in the tournaments throughout the summer and, for those who didn’t win, this year, here’s to next year.

The trophies will be formally presented on Friday the 15th October 2021 when we will be having out usual quiz and pea and pie evening in the newly re-furbished Sports and Social Club’s Memorial Hall. Full details will shortly be sent to members.
